In the three plus decades since Saje was founded all the way back in 1992, our brand name has virtually become synonymous with our #1 best-selling product, Peppermint Halo. A lot of people know that they’ve been using and finding relief through this iconic roll-on for many years, but it still surprises so many to learn that Peppermint Halo really is the product that started it all; the first product ever formulated at Saje.

In the very early days, there were multiple iterations of Peppermint Halo; our founders tested and trialed many to land on the most efficacious and relieving formulation you know and love today. Peppermint Halo has a simplicity within its complexity; it’s a blend of six essential oils studied for their ability to help ease and relieve headaches and symptoms of headaches when used in carefully blended formulation. The formula contains peppermint, its namesake, alongside eucalyptus, rosemary, lavender, vetiver and cajeput, all renowned for their ability to impart a deeply cooling and soothing effect on both body and mind when applied locally.

How Peppermint Halo became a hero at Saje

Our founders worked alongside a trusted aromatherapist in Vancouver where we were founded to create a product meant to achieve multiple results; they wanted it to be effective at providing ease and relief to headaches, which is how the specific formulation came to be. They knew that a topical cooling sensation, which means it produces a tingling effect when applied to the skin, was one of the ways that many people experienced an effect that was both balancing and restoring. And of course, they wanted it to become an instantly recognizable aroma that would quite literally have people in elevators, hotel lobbies and airplanes asking “are you wearing Peppermint Halo from Saje?” We’re biased of course, but we think they achieved what they set out to do.

What Peppermint Halo proved over the last 34 years is that when something works – really works – people will come back over and over to the feeling, aroma and effect they know and love. No matter how our collection has grown over the years, Peppermint Halo is still what we lovingly refer to as the ‘gateway to Saje’, meaning it’s the way that more than 9 in 10 people are introduced to our brand. You’ve seen us at your local yoga class, you’ve found us at large outdoor music festivals and you’ve experienced a Saje Team Member applying Peppermint Halo to your neck and shoulders each time you’ve walked through the door of our stores all across Canada; so many of you have loved Peppermint Halo, in fact, that one sells every two minutes. Peppermint Halo roll-on and refill

For the majority of the time since our brand launched, Peppermint Halo has been offered as both a roll-on remedy and a refill bottle. The roll-on remedy is our most well-known format, simply because of its ease of use. The roll-on is a 10ml double-ended bottle, with one end offering a roll-on applicator and the other end offering a dropper, for people who choose to further dilute the product for personal preference or due to skin sensitivity. The refill bottle is 30ml, which means that it can be used to refill your existing roll-on up for three additional times, and of course comes at a cost savings when purchased.

Both the remedy roll-on and the refill bottle are the same formulation and offer natural headache relief to our community as desired. We like to celebrate our Peppermint Halo products are licensed with Health Canada as Natural Health Products (NHP) and are assigned a Natural Product Number (NPN), which means they have been thoroughly reviewed, tested and proven to perform as we say they do and to meet rigorous standards for safety and efficacy.

After more than 30 years of Peppermint Halo roll-on, we’re thrilled to announce the newest addition to the franchise, our brand-new Peppermint Halo diffuser blend. It’s been highly requested and highly sought after, in part because of the way our community has come to know and love our topical roll-on for cooling, soothing relief. It’s been blended to complement the iconic roll-on yet has been masterfully crafted for inhalation purposes. We encourage our community to breathe deeply and experience the unmistakable effects of being soothed yet refreshed, restored, yet relieved. Keen eyes will see that there is one key difference in the diffuser blend vs the roll-on formulation, and that is that we’ve removed vetiver from the formula and added bay laurel. Vetiver, a base note known to be deep, rich and grounding, was removed so as to add a brighter aromatic expression in the air. We've also subtly rebalanced the entirety of the formulation, considering things like aromatic lift and perceptibility so that it's optimized for scent performance. These adjustments favor the brighter, fresher notes that we sense quickly through inhalation and have reduced the deeper, grounding elements that can be less expressive in diffusion and are better suited for topical application; a celebration in craftsmanship from our beloved in-house aromatherapist.

Additionally, we want to note that Peppermint Halo diffuser blend has been issued an NHP license to relieve headaches, and that all six ingredients in the blend are listed as medicinal ingredients, which means they are the specific, biologically active components responsible for the product’s health benefits, according to Health Canada. This license feels extra special because it’s the first of its kind in Canada; an inhalation-based product with a license that says it is to be used in aromatherapy to relieve headaches. The synergy of the six essential oils was blended to be expressive, aromatically penetrative, balancing and overall, uniquely Saje. This blend showcases a variety of herbs and other plant ingredients renowned for being green, verdant, earthy and fresh. The same crispness our community knows and loves will come through in this blend now specifically formulated for aromatic benefit – and we can’t wait for you to try it.

Both products use a combination of six plant-derived essential oils, with a small difference in formulation between products, to help ease and relieve headaches and headache symptoms when used according to the usage guidelines.

Peppermint Halo roll-on was designed to be applied along the hairline, over the temples and along the back of the neck, over the trapezius muscles and across the shoulders.Our roll-ons are most typically used when applied directly. We have a dropper end on our bottles (at the bottom), and we provide dilution instructions, in the case that you would prefer to further dilute the product (for sensitive skin,preference to a lower concentration,etc).

Yes, peppermint oil has been studied as effective for relieving headaches, especially those linked to tension, stress, stiffness or the experience of fatigue, rather than to a chronic illness or condition. Peppermint oil contains a high percentage of menthol, which provides the cooling effect when applied topically to the skin. The cooling feeling stimulates receptors on the skin that can help reduce the perception of pain, particularly around the temples, forehead, neck, and shoulders, which are common areas that tension headaches form.

While peppermint is the most commonly associated essential oil for relief from headaches, all of the other ingredients within our formula, like lavender, eucalyptus, rosemary and bay laurel are also recommended. Lavender, for example, is excellent at encouraging a sense of ease and relaxation in the body, if headaches are caused by stress. Eucalyptus can encourage full, deep breathing which often gets shallow when someone is having the experience of pain. Rosemary is often linked stimulation, which can help you to feel restored and clarified if a headache causes feelings of fogginess, while bay laurel is steadying and supportive, rather than sharp and intense, to help ease tension, naturally.

Yes! Peppermint Halo roll-on is small, portable and discreet, and can be taken with you on the go. When using the product outdoors, we always recommend practicing sun safety. Peppermint Halo roll-on is an excellent companion for both indoor and outdoor adventures, and can be applied to the neck and shoulders during warm weather to help you keep cool, as well as during moments when a headache strikes.
