To say that personal aroma, perfume, fragrance and scent have taken the beauty and personal care world by storm would be an understatement. In recent years, the fragrance industry has exploded, and a quick google search will tell you that while there is no exact, universally agreed upon number of fragrances in the world, there are tens of thousands of different perfumes from thousands of brands, creating instant decision-making fatigue, and that’s before you’ve even had a chance to explore what’s actually inside any of those bottles. At the end of the day, it’s so easy to become disillusioned with the fragrance industry as a whole, simply because of overwhelming choice and underwhelming transparency about the ingredients you’re exposing yourself to. 

In true Saje fashion, we decided that we wanted fragrance to be functional; we wanted to offer products to our community that smell phenomenal, that feel sensorially gorgeous on the skin and that actually do good when you’re wearing them, and thus, our Functional Fragrance collection was born. For more than 30 years, we’ve been leading the wellness industry when it comes to creating truly 100% natural products, powered by plants, that help create real-life benefits for people looking to swap out synthetics in categories like pain & recovery, sleep support, stress and mindfulness and more. It was only natural, no pun intended, that we would enter the fragrance space, functionally, to help spread the good word about the way that aromas derived from plants can not only allow you to smell the way you want, but can also support you in feeling your best while you do.  

What makes Functional Fragrance at Saje different? 

We’re thrilled to be introducing for the first time the Vibrance collection; an assortment of Functional Fragrances that were formulated to harness the energy of plants, bottled in fragrance form. We know and believe that plants are powerful and that when they’re distilled, they capture the energy you can feel when you wear them. Staying true to who we have always been as a brand, our commitment to 100% natural Functional Fragrance is at the forefront of the entire Vibrance collection; all of the products are free from any synthetic or artificial fragrances or additives, phthalates, formaldehyde and any ingredients considered potential endocrine disruptors. Instead, we’ve captured the core energy, or life force, of different plants that’s stored in petals, roots, leaves and bark prior to distillation, and we’ve bottled it for personal use. We created these products for community members who want the benefits of pure plant ingredients and a swap from synthetic fragrance. We’re not suggesting you give up fragrance, we’re suggesting you upgrade it!  

What is Functional Fragrance 

What Functional Fragrance is at Saje is almost easier explained by what it isn’t. It isn’t perfume, it isn’t made with any synthetics, and it isn’t meant to replicate what synthetic perfume does. Functional Fragrance is a collection of sensorial products that have been thoughtfully formulated to offer enticing, enveloping natural aromas, made with essential oils that offer functional benefits to both the body and mind, that also feel luxurious, nourishing and replenishing when applied. The Vibrance collection: face & aura mists and body oil mists

As part of our Vibrance collection launch, we’re launching two different formats of products, a water-based face & aura mist and a body oil mist, in four tantalizing aromas. First, we’ll explain how to use them individually as well as layered together. 

Water-based face & aura mist 

These mists are meant to be quick, refreshing mists that can be used as desired throughout the day. The water-base means that they are meant to be spritzed over the face, hair and body as desired, offering an impactful burst of aromatic freshness that is sensed quickly by your nose and that instantly revitalizes your senses. How and when might you use a water-based mist? We always recommend shaking well before applying. With the eyes and mouth closed, mist as desired over the face, hair and body and remember to breathe deeply for the maximum experience of the essential oil benefits. You might choose to use a water-based mist throughout the day when you need a boost, after a bath or shower to prep the skin for additional hydration products, or in conjunction with the body oil mist, for a layered aromatic experience. 

Oil-based body oil mist 

These mists are meant to act as a base layer, and to provide benefits both from the aromatics of essential oils and skin-nourishing benefits from the ingredient base. Plant-derived ingredients from coconut fatty alcohols, palm kernel oil and sugarcane are what help create the dry-touch oil feel on the skin and provide the silky slip that acts as a natural alternative to silicones. We suggest to apply the oil mists anywhere on the body from the neck down; you’ll note the fine mist settles beautifully on the skin, requiring very little massage before it melts right in. How and when might you use an oil-based body oil mist? Spritz lightly over the body from the neck down, and either let the oil mist absorb naturally or gently massage into the skin where applied. You might choose an oil-based body oil mist after a bath or shower when skin is still damp, alongside your morning skincare routine, or any time you’re looking to replenish the skin and immerse yourself in fragrant, 100% natural aroma. 

Deep dive the four new aromas in the Vibrance collection 

Without further ado, we’re so excited to share with you the four new aromas we’ve introduced as part of the Vibrance Functional Fragrance collection.  

Illuminate

First is Illuminate, offered as both a water-based mist and an oil-based body oil mist. Illuminate is a signature fragrance inspired by its single note, lavender, the most well-known of all essential oils. The aroma of lavender is instantly recognizable; softly floral, sweet and herbaceous. The natural sweetness of lavender is not syrupy, but rather, unfolds on the skin in a way that is clean, balanced and calming. Why lavender? Lavender is a clean-smelling, floral and herbaceous essential oil that is most universally understood to be calming, soothing and balancing to both the body and mind. In natural functional fragrance, it offers a soft and powdery note that upon dry down on the skin unfolds as delicate, subtle and with a touch of 'green'. Lavender is meant to offer feelings of both serenity and clarity when worn.

Full Bloom

Next up is Full Bloom, again in both water and oil bases. Rose, known widely as the Queen of Essential Oils, provides the backdrop for one of our most luxurious products yet. The aroma of rose is fresh, distinct and richly floral with honeyed sweetness. Rose is known to be emotionally stabilizing and is commonly associated with the heart chakra. Rose was an obvious choice, for the many benefits it provides aromatically and sensorially. Full Bloom is made with wildcrafted rose from Bulgaria's Rose Valley, a region famous for its rose output that produces close to 80% of the classic floral essential oil created in the world.  The beautiful, iconic roses that we know and love have a recognizable, floral aroma that has made them one of the world’s most popular flowers for thousands of years. It is thought to have a number of benefits, including elevating the mood, improving the appearance of skin, and encouraging feelings of love and balance. 

Earth Bound 

The third aroma as a part of our new natural fragrance assortment is called Earth Bound, and both the water and oil-based mists are formulated with a signature fragrance inspired by deep, rich, earthy and bright notes like cedarwood, patchouli, orange and neroli. The aroma of this synergy is warming and grounding, led by citrus and anchored by earthy and herbaceous notes, known to help create feelings of harmony and stability. Cedarwood oil is unique as a woody essential oil because it’s comparatively lighter, sweeter and softer that traditional woods like pine or balsam fir, making it a great choice for those who prefer a gentler scent from the outdoors, while patchouli acts as the anchor that adds richness to the blend, helping to promote a balanced connection between mind, body spirit. The formula is rounded out with sweet citrus-florals of orange and neroli, offering sweetness, freshness and balance to the blend.

Expression

The fourth and final aroma in our new Vibrance collection is Expression, again offered in both our water-based and oil-based mist options. Expression is a signature fragrance inspired by light, refreshing, lively notes like spearmint, grapefruit and bergamot. The aroma of this synergy is crisp and fresh, led by soft mint and married with citrus and herbaceous notes, known to help uplift and awaken the body & mind. One of the more unique aromas we offer at Saje, spearmint is light, sweet, fruity-mint scented and thought to brighten and positively enhance the mood. The fresher, zestier notes in the blend of tart grapefruit and lively bergamot help create sunny sweetness that is experienced as both bright and refreshing and emotionally balancing when worn on the skin.

How is Functional Fragrance different from perfume?
